Autumn Observations © 1992 75" x 75"

Clearly inspired by my love for nature, this piece was the beginning of my exploration into irregular piecing, a complete departure from the traditional grid. With the exception of leaf patterns, no two pieces are the same shape or size. A new freezer paper piecing technique was used and astounding lessons were learned through a "sew it up and rip it out" ritual. I stumbled through the first half of the piece until I finally discovered a process of piecing which did not drive me mad. The technique I was able to develop is one I now incorporate into much of my work. There are fourteen birds and animals harmoniously coexisting in this quilt. Winning a Best in Show in one national competition, and then receiving no recognition at all in the next taught me to create from my heart, to love my quilts unconditionally, and never to value them based on the approval of others.

Machine piecing, hand quilting.
